Socket preservation – also referred to as alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) – involves reducing bone loss after a tooth has been extracted. The purpose of doing this is to preserve the tooth socket in the alveolar bone.

What is the process for socket preservation?

A special membrane containing elements which encourage bone growth is placed in the wound. Alternatively, a bone grafting material or scaffold is placed in the socket of an extracted tooth when the tooth is removed. The socket is then stitched closed or covered with a non-resorbable or resorbable membrane and stitched.

What is the benefit of socket preservation?

When a tooth or teeth have been removed, it is important the jaw bone is preserved as this helps to keep the socket in its original shape. Without socket preservation, the bone quickly resorbs. This can lead to significant bone density loss in the six months after the tooth has been removed. If this occurs, the jaw bone does not revert to its original shape.

If you have had one or multiple teeth removed and would like to discuss your options, the dentists at Lillybrook Dental can help.

Any invasive or surgical procedure has risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Individual results can vary.
