When is bone grafting required?

Before you receive a single tooth implant, multiple tooth implants, or implant supported dentures, it may be necessary for you to undergo a bone graft.

Bone grafting could be an option if you:

  • Have one tooth or multiple teeth missing and it’s been some years since you lost the tooth or teeth. Often bone weakens and even disappears, making it too weak to support the base and crown of the implant. Bone graft will preserve your socket and allow you to have implants.
  • Suffer from severe gum disease which has caused your teeth to become loose and fall out
  • Have a weak jawbone due to injury or long term use of dentures
  • Have a cleft lip or palate, which may have impacted on the number of adult teeth to come through

When is bone grafting required?

The dentists at Lillybrook Dental are experienced at completing bone grafting treatment and can provide this pain free in our surgery. The procedure is performed by giving a local anaesthetic, and then making an incision in the gum. Grafting material comprised of bone minerals or synthetic bone produced in a dental laboratory is transplanted into the bone. Stitches are used to close the incision made for the procedure.

It usually takes between three and six months for the bone graft to heal completely. Your dentist will provide clear instructions on the post-operative care to take after your procedure. Once full healing has occurred, the jaw and gums affected by the bone graft will be ready to support your single tooth or multiple tooth implants.

If you would like to restore your smile and confidence with socket preservation using a bone graft, we invite you to get in touch with Lillybrook Dental. We know we can help you!

Any invasive or surgical procedure has risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner. Individual results can vary.
